Michael Kellar, 56, of Tacoma in Washington, was aboard a plane bound for San Jose in California when the passenger behind him read what he was writing.

The woman, who did not want to be named, saw the messages clearly because Kellar was holding his phone at eye-level and using large font.

She snapped photos of the texts when it became apparent he was talking about sexually molesting young children, said a spokesperson for San Jose Police Department.

She alerted crew members aboard the Southwest Airlines flight from Seattle who contacted authorities.

Officers detained Kellar and San Jose PD ICAC detectives immediately responded to the scene along with the San Francisco Division of the FBI.

A police spokesperson said: ‘Follow-up investigation revealed an adult female suspect in Tacoma, Washington, engaged in inappropriate sexual texts with Kellar. Additionally, two children aged five and seven have been identified as victims.

‘Members of the Seattle ICAC and Seattle Division of the FBI took the female suspect, Gail Burnworth, into custody at her Tacoma residence.’

Kellar was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on two counts of attempted child molestation and two counts of solicitation of a sex crime.

Burnworth was booked into the Pierce County Jail in Washington for sexual exploitation of a minor, rape of a child, and dealing in depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

San Jose sex-crimes detective Nick Jourdenais told The Mercury News: ‘It’s kind of mind-blowing. She gets on a plane, a normal citizen minding her business. A couple of hours later, she’s intervening on quite possibly the most traumatic thing children can go through. This was life-altering for them.
